What is the Difference Between Crystal and Diamond Microdermabrasion:
There is much controversy these days regarding traditional crystal systems vs. the newer diamond systems and the treatments that they offer. Companies producing and selling microdermabrasion systems are in a constant struggle to win market share in the increasingly competitive skin rejuvenation industry. Clearly the manufacturers of each type of these systems stand by their sound opinion and have a list of reasons why. So what is the real answer, Is One Better Than The Other?
In order to appreciate the nature of this question we need to understand the differences between the two types of treatments being offered by each type of machine.
Crystal Microdermabrasion is an ablative procedure defined as the wearing away or removal of the outer or forward surface of an object by means of heat, force or friction. Crystal microdermabrasion treatments involve the use of a special, hand-held device that propels a high-speed flow of aluminum oxide crystals that are "blasted" out onto the skin. At the same time, the machine's vacuum system sucks away dirt, dead cells and used crystals.
Diamond Microdermabrasion is an abrasive procedure defined as the wearing away or removal of the outer or forward surface of an object by means of scratching, grating or sanding. Diamond microdermabrasion treatments are completed by the use of a diamond tipped wand that is then used to "scratch or sand" away the top level of the dermis while the machine's vacuum system sucks away dirt, debris and dead cells.
In the easiest terms: Crystal treatments can be compared to "Sand blasting" while diamond treatments can be compared to the use of "Sand Paper".
While both have the capacity to produce the same results, it should be noted that crystal microdermabrasion treatments are much more dependant on the technology or machine used by the operator who is dependant on the force of the crystal flow as well as the strength of the suction. Diamond treatments on the other hand are more dependant on the operator who is more in control of the treatment through the use of a manual pressure technique along with the strength of the suction.
The diamond microdermabrasion system replaces the traditional micro-crystal flow with a disposable or reusable diamond tip wand. Areas closer to the eyes and mouth can be abraded more accurately with diamond microdermabrasion (no risk of stray crystals causing damage or being ingested).
Of course one of the most commonly recognized difference is that traditional crystal microdermabrasion technology involves the use of crystals that are required to be replaced on a regular basis and can eventually end up costing more in the long run. With diamond treatments there is no need to continually replace the crystals nor is there the danger, although most doctors agree that aluminum oxide is not dangerous when ingested and is safe for use with skin resurfacing treatments (specifically microdermabrasion) but there is a great deal of controversy in the medical community about its side effects.
For the sake of both perceived safety and effectiveness, crystal microdermabrasion machines (with aluminum oxide or sodium bicarbonate crystals) are slowly being phased out and replaced with diamond microdermabrasion machines.
Some Facts additional facts to consider
Microdermabrasion Crystals
- Aluminum oxide crystals have been the most commonly used abrasive or ablative agent for the last 20 years (no wonder they were so popular in microdermabrasion). Aluminum oxide is the second hardest mineral (diamonds are first).
- The irregular crystal shape makes them a more effective abrader. Aluminum oxide is also an inert material and it causes no allergic or adverse reactions. It is not toxic when ingested and is non-carcinogenic.
- Sodium bicarbonate crystals are an organic alternative to aluminum oxide crystals but they are a lot softer and less effective in microdermabrasion. They are used on patients with hyperpigmentation and can be easily washed off after treatment (sodium bicarbonate is water-soluble).
Diamond Microdermabrasion (Crystal-Free)
- Crystal-free tips and natural diamond tips are easier to use and unlikely to leave tiny particles in the eyes, nose or mouth. But a crystal-free microdermabrasion machine isn't completely safe.
- Bacteria from exfoliated skin stays on the tip and can be unknowingly spread to another areas of the face or body. Diamond tip microdermabrasion is also not as effective on irregular surfaces because there are no crystals to fit the exact irregularities of the skin.
Both Crystal and Diamond treatments are just as effective and the price is similar (between $75 and $200 per treatment) each offering both pros and cons. In my opinion it all comes down to understanding the differences of the treatments but ultimately it is a matter of personal preference.
